Apprentices II
Hayden, who hails from Colorado, arrived on Friday and has been getting settled in since then. He is taking a year out from university and hopes to start his own organic farm in Mississippi one day:-)
Both Hayden and Shawn have been working non-stop since their arrivals; planting cabbages, applying compost, weeding and seeding salad, irrigation, pest management, harvesting and washing veggies and preparing for market, record keeping and having a go at a bit of farm management.
Shawn also experienced 5 minutes of fame on the television news on Tuesday night when CBC News reporter Tanya came out to the farm to interview him, Serge and myself about being/ working with an apprentice. Shawn did a great job of explaining the benefits of apprenticing and also the challenges (mostly financial) of getting into farming as someone with hopes, dreams and hands on experience but no land or equipment.
We now have now planted well over 300 Brassicas (cabbages, broccoli, brussels sprouts and kale) and given them a good feed of compost. The rain we have been getting will help them to adjust quickly to their new location, but it is making it tricky to get into the field which is very slippery. We won’t be able to plant anything else until it dries up a bit.
In the mean time we are working in the greenhouses, weeding, planting and caring for our greens and carrots.
